January of this year's hottest in history

Last month, January, it was the hottest in history, the European climate monitor said on February 6th. High temperatures were recorded despite expectations that the coldest conditions of the phenomenon, La Nina, could reduce high temperatures in the world. Climate change service, Copernicus, said January was 1.75 degrees Celsius hotter [...]

The climate change service, Copernicus, said January was 1.75 degrees warmer than in pre-industrial times, continuing to mark the record temperatures recorded in 2023 and 2024, as greenhouse gas emissions are heating the planet.

Climate scientists had expected the trend of high temperatures to be halted after the climate phenomenon of the heat, El Nino, peaked in January 2024, and temperatures gradually began to cool after the La Nina phase began.

But the heat has continued by approaching new records, which has sparked debate among scientists over factors that are bringing temperatures beyond expectations.

This is a little surprising... we're not seeing the effect of the cooling, or the temporary decline of global temperatures we've been waiting to see”, said about AFP, Julien Nicolas, climate scientist in Copernicus.

The effect of La Nina is expected to be small, and Copernicus said the prevailing temperatures in parts of the Pacific Ocean suggest that “there is slowdown or deadlock” of the effects of cooling phenomenon.

Scientists have warned that any increase in a fraction of a degree increases the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, heavy rains and droughts.

Last month, Copernicus said that average global temperatures during 2023 and 2024 for the first time exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius.

According to the European assembly, this does not mean the permanent overcoming of the goal set out in the Paris Climate Agreement so that temperatures do not heat up more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In general, according to Copernicus, the year 2025 is not expected to have temperatures like the two previous years, but scientists expect to list the third hottest year in history.

This climate organisation said it will monitor ocean temperatures throughout 2025 to see if there will be other temperature changes.

The EU monitor uses billions of measurements from satellites, ships, planes and weather stations to make climate calculations.

This monitor has started collecting climate data since 1940, but other climate data sources such as ice cores, tree circles and coral skeletons allow scientists to expand their conclusions using data dating back much.

Scientists say the current period is probably the hottest time Earth has experienced in at least 125,000 years.
