Hoti on Independence Day: We remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for freedom

On this historic day, Hoti says the sacrifice of all those who gave their lives for freedom should be remembered, as well as Kosovo's achievements over the years since it became a state.

17 years of independence on February 17th 2008, Kosovo declared its independence, becoming an independent state and recognised by most of the world's states. This was a historic moment, which followed a long period of peaceful resistance and the war for freedom from the Kosovo Liberation Army. After decades of suffering from the Milosevic regime and the 1999 bloody war, the people of Kosovo managed to realise the dream of living in a free and democratic state. President Rugova's vision of an independent and democratic Kosovo culminated just this day 17 years ago. Kosovo has made major steps in economic development, strengthening institutions and democracy, but still needs more efforts to fully integrate into international institutions. On the anniversary of independence, we remember the great sacrifices of those who gave their lives for the freedom of Kosovo, war veterans, as well as all who committed themselves to helping Kosovo build a better future. On this anniversary, there is also an opportunity to stress the importance of internal unity, co-ordination with our allies, and strengthening relations with democratic countries. The recognition of Kosovo by other states, including the five European Union states, is a positive step towards Kosovo's full affirmation on the international stage. Kosovo Independence Day is a special moment of pride and hope for the future. The Republic of Kosovo is a permanent project and love for our Republic is permanent!
