The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has promised to end the war quickly. He has said this war is costing many American taxpayers and has asked European countries to increase defence spending. He has also suggested that Ukraine must pay for Washington's support by offering its rare minerals.
During his speech at the NATO summit in Brussels, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth added that our <x0th transatlantic relationship requires that European allies assume responsibility for the safety of the continent”.
Mr. Hegseth is the first official of President Donald Trump's new administration to participate in a meeting of the north-Atlantic alliance. Thirty-one Washington allies look forward to learning how much military and financial support Washington intends to give Ukraine from now on.
Secretary Hegseth held talks Wednesday with United Kingdom Defence Secretary John Healey ahead of a meeting of the Ukrainian Defence Contact Group. About 50 countries have offered Ukraine over $126 billion in military aid through this forum for nearly three years.
This week's meeting, however, was called from another country for the first time, the UK. No decision has been made as to who can head the next meeting if one is held.
His trip takes place less than two weeks before Russia's third anniversary of aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
