At least 59.2 million people in a country of 84 million people have the right to vote for the new Bundestag.
It's Bundestag, with 630 members, who will elect the next Chancellor.
The four main candidates for Chancellor are Olaf Scholz (SPD), Friedrich Merz (CDU), Robert Habeck (Gelbrite) and Alice Weidel (AfD).
Polls favour Merz, but the future government depends on possible coalition agreements.
The vote closes at 6:00, with the vote counting starting immediately after that. A clear result is expected to emerge soon, while negotiations on government creation could last for weeks or months.
These elections are held earlier than initial planning, following the collapse of the Schelz coalition.
The new government will face major challenges, such as economic recovery and migration management. /euronews
