European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has called for comprehensive dialogue in Serbia and independent investigations into attacks on protesters.
Three months after the tragic collapse of a shelter at Novi Sad's Railway Station, where 15 people were killed, student protests continue, supported by other citizens. According to the Centre for Investigative Reporting (CINS), as of the start of the protests, over 50 attacks on students have been recorded.
In a public letter, European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stressed that European values should be respected and that reforms for Serbia's EU integration are key to strengthening democracy, fighting corruption and ensuring judicial independence. She underlined that progress towards the EU will help strengthen media freedom and improve conditions for fair elections.
“The road to EU membership includes reforms, which are part of our common values and practice. Serbia's path to the European Union offers solutions to many issues which are at the heart of today's discussions. Reforms that are part of the EU integration process will strengthen the fight against corruption, ensure the independence of the judiciary and the responsibility of institutions. It should be stressed that progress towards the EU will promote and media freedom and improve conditions for the development of elections”, Marta Kos said.
