Any score below 20% would be the worst for this party in post-war history and polls show it far from that threshold, currently at 14%. Olaf Scholz would thus become the Chancellor with the shortest mandate in the last 50 years and the only Social Democrat that has failed to be re-elected as Chancellor, writes DW.
According to polls, Friedrich Merz has the best chance of winning the Chancellorship. CDU chairman leads the Union of CDU/ CSU, who, after leading the country for 16 years, came into opposition in 2021 and now seeks to return to power.
