President Trump made these comments to reporters on the presidential plane “Air Force One” and said “is possible” for the United States and China to reach a new trade agreement. A conversation between Xi and Trump presidents is seen as essential to the relief or possible postponement of commercial tariffs.
“We will visit President Xi and all who come (in the US)”, President Trump said, while also speaking of other leaders who can visit the United States.
President Xi traveled to the United States for the last time in November 2023, on his fifth visit to the country as Chinese president, to a summit with then US President Joe Biden, which resulted in an agreement to resume military communications between the two countries, and to limit the production of phothanide.
Presidents Trump and Xi had spoken shortly before President Trump took office on January 20th and discussed various issues, including TikTok, trade and Taiwan.
President Trump told reporters Wednesday that he is talking to China about Tik Tok after the United States, while Washington is trying to mediate a sale of the popular app owned by the Chinese firm ByteDance. President Trump said last week that he had talked to Mr. Xi since taking office too, but offered no details on the topics of that conversation.
China's Foreign Ministry did not respond directly to Mr. Trump's comments that day and instead referred to reporters in their planned “ ” before President Trump took office.
Washington and Beijing have had strained relations for years because of different attitudes on issues ranging from trade, tariffs and cyber security, to issues related to TikTok, Taiwan, Hong Kong, human rights and the origin of COVID-19.
President Trump also told reporters he could make an agreement with Russia for the war in Ukraine.
“We can make a deal with Russia to stop killing”, said Mr. Trump, adding that he thought the Russians wanted the war to end.
“I think they have a slight advantage because they have taken a lot of territory”, President Trump said. /voa
