United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has signed an agreement Monday through which Turkey bought 20 fighter planes, Eurofaster Typhoon, for 8 billion pounds, his office said.
In July, Turkey and Britain had signed preliminary agreements on the purchase of 40 Typhoon aircraft, approved by members of the Eurofly consortium, including Germany, Italy and Spain, and represented by Airbus companies BAE Systems and Leonardo.
Starmer met with Turkish President Tayyip Recep Erdogan in Ankara on Monday to sign the agreement.
Turkey is seeking to benefit from these advanced warplanes so as not to fall behind regional rivals like Israel, which this year has carried out attacks across the Middle East.
Turkey, which is now enjoying the warmest relations with the West in recent years, has sought to buy Euroflyer and potentially American F-35 aircraft to support its old fleet, which consists mainly of F-16 aircraft. /Periscopi/
