He's under 24-hour protection from two armed officers, the only people in prison allowed to carry weapons, which has angered the staff, Telegrafi reports, the Periscope broadcast.
Because of added security and a private cell, Sarcozy holds about four times more space than ordinary prisoners, even though prison is already very crowded.
Otherwise, the 70-year-old was sentenced to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in a complex issue allegedly involving the former Libyan regime of Muammar Gaddhafi.
