Former US Deputy Secretary of State James Rubin has expressed concern for the possibility that former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders be convicted by the Special Court. Rubin has stressed that the penalty would be tragedy for Kosovo.
I pray this does not happen. It would be a real tragedy for people who fought and many of them died for their freedom, for those who represented millions of Kosovo Albanians, to be convicted without any evidence. It would be a big wound to the international justice system. I hope and pray this doesn't happen”
In September, the former US diplomat has given his testimony before Kosovo's Specialised Chambers, within the protection of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, and his fellow fighters, charged with war crimes and against humanity.
Otherwise, the testimony of former high-ranking war-time officials in Kosovo could be a defining element for the truth of the KLA's liberation war by overturning the specialised prosecutor's inauguration that the KLA has had the central consolidation structure that, according to her, has ordered the killing of civilians during the war in Kosovo.
