This development comes after the difficulties faced in the first diplomatic communications between the two sides, as well as because of the Kremlin's unchanged stances on the Ukrainian issue.
The first official call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was named “-productive” from official sources, but it also became clear that there was not enough progress to advance the summit talks.
Trump himself reportedly has voiced doubts about continuing the process, saying that the “the two sides are still not ready for the talks to move forward significantly”.
NBC News, citing a senior White House official, reported that the preparation process has been suspended for an indefinite period. The suspension decision is taken after estimates that there is no favourable climate for developing a fruitful dialogue between the two leaders in this phase.
According to a Reuters report, the entire initiative has been questioned following the Kremlin's refusal to accept an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine ʹ a key condition set by the American side to continue preparations for the meeting. Without an agreement to stop fighting, the summit is not considered possible.
