Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa said he was the victim of an attempt to poison chocolate and jam during a public activity.
Dessert contained three chemicals in high concentrations and this cannot be involuntarily”, Noboa said in an interview for CNN.
The 37-year-old president said toxic substances could not have come from their own products or their package. The military body responsible for his security filed a complaint with prosecutors.
“We filed a complaint, presented evidence for focusing three chemicals”.
It is the second time the Noboa administration has claimed an assassination against his life, amid antigovernmental protests by indigenous peoples and growing crime.
Earlier this month, the government said Noboa's vehicle carried bullet marks after its convoy was attacked by a group of protesters throwing stones, angry at rising fuel prices.
The largest organisation of indigenous peoples in the country, dubbed Conaie, has blocked roads including in the capital's Pinhincha province since 22 September due to increased fuel costs.
