This response comes in an increased period of political and diplomatic tensions between Venezuela and the United States, following Caracas' repeated charges against Washington for “open interventions in domestic affairs”.

The Venezuelan government claims the US is supporting opposition groups and is trying to undermine the internal stability of the Latin-American state.
In his address, Maduro underlined that Venezuela's priority is peace and national sovereignty, inviting the US administration to ban any threatening rhetoric or action that could lead to escalation of the situation.
