Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti has said Kosovo “wants to help” The United Kingdom in the fight against illegal immigration in exchange for support for strengthening security against threats from Serbia and Russia.
On the eve of the summit of Western Balkan leaders to be held Wednesday in London, Kurti confirmed that talks are under way between Kosovo officials and the United Kingdom on the issue.
“We want to help Britain. We view this as a friendly and political obligation. Although we have limited capacity, we are willing to contribute”, he told the newspaper “The Times” on Tuesday.
Three other countries of the region -- Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina -- have rejected the British offer of establishing such centres. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama reiterated that “immediately in Albania” would not accept such an agreement, while Montenegrin counterpart Milojko Spajzic said Montenegro is not part of the Balkan immigrant smuggling route.
Britain is looking for partners in the region as part of efforts to curb illegal crossings through the La Manche Canal, where some 37 thousand immigrants have registered this year, a 30 percent increase compared to last year. /Periscope/
