Why did Israel launch air strikes in Gaza and then “began the” ceasefire?

Palestinians in Gaza have experienced the 24 deadliest hours since the beginning of the United States-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which went into effect almost three weeks ago. Israel killed more than 100 people, including 46 children, in attacks late Tuesday and Wednesday. Medical sources told Al Jazeera that the attacks hit the entire Gaza, records thegraf.

This adds to dozens of previous ceasefire violations with a difficult prospect ahead.

Let's take a look at where things are:

What happened recently?

The Israeli Army said by noon Wednesday it was returning to the ceasefire in line with instructions from the political leadership, but remained ready to attack again if necessary.

The military indicated it hit more than 30 targets in the besieged enclave, claiming the targets were <x0->terrorists in command positions within terrorist organisations”.

But as more residential buildings were destroyed by Israeli bombs, at least 18 members of the same family in central Gaza, including children, parents and grandparents, were among the victims.

Civil Protection teams were again forced to use small tools and their hands to dig into the ruins of the bombed areas to seek survivors and dead.

Some tents belonging to displaced Palestinian families were also targeted, reports Telegraph, broadcast Periscope.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 68,643 people have been killed and 170,655 have been injured since the start of Israel's genocide war in October 2023.

What was Israel's excuse?

On Tuesday, Israel announced that the body of a slave transferred from Gaza by Hamas through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) did not comply with one of 13 who would be handed over as part of the ceasefire.

Israeli forensic analysts determined that the remains belonged to Ophir Tzarfat, who was sent to Gaza during Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel on 7 October 2023, and whose partial remains were found in November the same year.

Israeli officials reacted furiously, especially the far-right ministers in the coalition government who oppose the ban on war in Gaza and want Hamas to destroy”.

An organisation led by the families of the captives also expressed outrage and demanded action.

Shortly later, the Qasssam Brigades, Hamas' armed arm, said they would hand over the remains of an Israeli slave at 8 p.m. (18:00 GMT), but withdrew after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah ordered “powerful attacks to Gaza.

Heavy shots and explosions were also heard in the southern town of Rafah. Israel claimed this was an attack by Hamas' warriors, something Hamas rejected.

Israel also accused the Palestinian group of <x0inscaning” of restoring the remains of a prisoner after showing images allegedly showing Hamas' fighters burying a body before calling the KNKK.

The KNKK said its personnel “were not aware that a dead person was deployed there prior to their arrival”.

What does the truce contain?

As part of the deal, which went into effect on October 10th, Hamas delivered all 20 remaining surviving captives held in Gaza within days.

The group has also handed over the remains of 15 dead Israeli captives as part of the agreement, while another 13 remain undiscovered or unsent.

Israel has allowed some humanitarian aid in Gaza, but supplies have been well below the 600 trucks specified in the ceasefire, a level required to help the famine-hit population.

Israel has also prevented the entry of mobile tents and houses into enclaves, but has allowed the entry of several heavy machinery to search for the remains of its captives, writes Al Jazeera, records Telegrafi.

Once all the bones are handed over, a second phase of the ceasefire could enter into force, allowing the establishment of an international stabilisation and reconstruction of Gaza.

Israeli officials have repeatedly stressed that they will not allow the formation of a Palestinian sovereign state and have advanced with a plan to illegally annex the West Coast occupied despite international criticism.

What's Hamas saying?

Hamas has accused Israel of inventing the false “descriptions” to renew aggression in Gaza.

Prior to the attacks during the past day, Hamas said Israel had committed at least 125 violations.

Since 10 October, the Ministry of Health in Gaza said at least 211 Palestinians have been killed and 597 injured in Israeli attacks, while 482 troops have been found.

Hamas has also accused Israel of obstructing efforts to find the bodies of captives, using the same troops as justification to claim disrespect for the rules.

He stressed that Israel has prevented the entry of heavy machinery into Gaza to find remains and has prevented the search teams from entering key areas.

The Qassam brigades said their fighters have found the bodies of two other dead captives -- Amiram Cooper and Sahar Baruch -- during research operations conducted Tuesday.

Hamas and other Palestinian factions have said they are prepared to hand over Gaza's administration to a Palestinian technocratic body, claiming armed resistance is the result of Israel's invasion and apartheid decades.

What does that mean for Gaza civilians?

Since the start of the war, civilians have been the main victims of Israel's Gaza war.

They have been targeted disproportionately, as happened in the last night's attacks, and have also seen Gaza's infrastructure and livelihoods destroyed by Israeli bombings and invading forces.

Since nowhere in Gaza is completely safe, Palestinians experienced another panic that Israeli attacks could be expanded.

Fighting planes and Israeli intelligence planes continued to hover over enclaves.

What happens now?

The US have repeatedly expressed support for Israel despite ceasefire violations, stressing Israel's right to defend itself.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that ceasefire “is not at risk” despite attacks.

Mediator Qatar has previously condemned violations of the agreement and accused Israel of mini-enforcement.

But along with Egypt, he has worked to ensure that the “agreement remains alive”. /Periscope/
