US media have reported flood and material damage incidents in parts of the city, while officials at the JFK airports, LaGardia and Newark said flight schedules have been interrupted due to extreme weather conditions.
According to meteorological authorities, a record 4.7cm of rain was registered in Central Park, while 5,31cm fell at LaGardia Airport and 5,05cm at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, reports Cnn.
Heavy rains have caused difficulties in road flow and temporary disruptions of public transportation in some areas of the city. Authorities have warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel and follow emergency instructions until the weather is stable.
