According to reports, the arrest warrant, signed on July 29th, targets Assad for his alleged role in chemical attacks committed in 2013.
The attacks took place on August 5, 2013, in Adra and Douma, wounding about 450 people, and on August 21st in the Eastern Globe, where gas reportedly killed more than 1,000 individuals, according to American intelligence.
Otherwise, this is the third arrest warrant the French authorities have issued for Assad.
French courts have earlier issued arrest warrants concerning the bombing of a press centre in Homs in 2012, where American journalist Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik were killed, as well as the bombing of a civilian residential area in Derina in 2017.
Assad, Syria's leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Bayth party regime, which had been in power since 1963.
The administration of interim President Ahmad Shara was formed in January. /Periscope/
