According to Belgian news agency Belga, the government is considering the possibility of renting or building a prison for convicted persons who have no legitimate status position in the Balkan country. Kosovo has a similar agreement with Denmark.
Belgian Justice Minister Annelyes Verlinden, as well as Minister of Asylum and Migration Anneleen Van Bossuy, recently travelled to Kosovo for the first talks, writes N-tv, the German media member of RTL, broadcasts.
Lack of space has already brought a new law
Overcrowded prisons are a problem in Belgium. Thus, a new law entered into force during the summer in this western country. According to him, a precise reason should be given during review of judicial decisions why a prison sentence is really necessary. Currently, some 2,000 prison locations are missing.
Belgium was sentenced by the European Court for Human Rights in 2014 for conditions unknown in its prisons, and since then it has been criticised several times for this reason, among other things, by the Council of Europe. According to the Belgian news agency, the German media escorts, Kosovo wants support from Belgium on its way to the European Union.
