WAS for Vucinic's declaration of sanctions on NIS: No business common with Russia

With Russia there is no ordinary “business”, the US State Department questioned by Radio Free Europe about Serbia's president's statement, Aleksandar Vuciq, who said US sanctions on Serbia's Oil Industry, NIS, there are heavy and serious “”. The American Treasury said it sanctioned the Russian state company, [...]

The American Treasury said it has sanctioned the Russian state company Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, headquartered in Russia.

NIS company was sanctioned because of the so-called “secondary risk”, it means due to connection with Russian Gazprom.

Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, announced at a press conference on January 10th, following this publication by the US Treasury Department, that it is “serious and serious sanctions” and that it requires Russia's full “out of NIS ownership”.

“They do not allow the possibility of 49 per cent or less Russian capital”, President Vuciq said.

The UN told REL that the United States “remains committed to preventing Russia's revenue generation and procurement and financial networks Moscow uses to support its fight against Ukraine”.

“We will continue to take all necessary actions to advance responsibility for those who enable or benefit from Russia's illegal war and prevent Putin from using energy as a printing tool”, the State Department said in an answer.

US Department added that “The US will continue to work with partners and allies worldwide to ensure the security and diversity of energy supplies”.

NIS is the only company in Serbia engaged in research, production and processing of oil and natural gas production.

Gazprom Neft has shares in NIS since 2022. The stake also has its mother company Gazprom.

According to NIS data, the Gazprom Neft company currently owns 50 per cent of NIS's share capital, the Republic of Serbia owns 29.87 per cent of the shares, while the Gazprom company owns 6.15 per cent of the shares.

The rest belongs to citizens, employees, former employees and other smaller shareholders.

Gazprom Neft has been under European and US sanctions since 2014, due to the annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea Peninsula from Russia, and the company has been denied access to EU and US markets.

NIS, otherwise, owns more than 400 gas stations in Serbia and in countries in the region: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania and Bulgaria. /REL
