TikTok has been banned in the United States and has disappeared from Apple and Google app markets hours before entering into force on January 19th, the law requiring a ban on the platform used by 170 million Americans.
President-elect Donald Trump has said that “most likely” will give TikTok a suspension of the stop for 90 days after taking office Monday, a promise TikTok mentioned in the announcement he published on app users.
The law banning TikTok was approved in the US. Unfortunately, it means you can't use TikTok right now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok after he takes over the task”, said the announcement that the platform published for users Saturday evening.
Even if it is temporary, TikTok's unprecedented ban, which is owned by ByteDance from China, is expected to have different impacts on US-Chinese reports, on domestic American politics, on social media markets and on millions of Americans who depend economically on this app.
This is the first time U.S. has stopped a large social media platform. The U.S. Congress passed the law on its ban last year, but the law allows the new Trump administration authority to ban or demand that it be sold to other Chinese-owned apps.
Other applications owned by ByteDance, including the CapCut video edition app and the Lemmon8 app, also went out in the United States.
The 90-day extension is something that will probably happen because it's the right thing”, Trump told NBC. If you decide to do this, I will probably report you to this topic Monday”.
Under the law adopted last year, which was held in force by the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this week, the platform had until Sunday to cut off contact with partners in China or be banned in the United States because of concerns that this app poses threats to national security.
The White House, led by Democrat Joe Biden, said on Saturday it is up to the new administration to take action.
Cyber security firms have suggested that the app is capable of collecting users' data beyond what content they see in TikTok, and China passed a law in 2017 obliging Chinese citizens living abroad to cooperate with its intelligence device. /REL
