Yoon Suk Yeol has become the first acting president of South Korea to have been arrested, ending a several-week clash between investigators and his personal security.
Yoon, whose failed attempt to establish military law plunged the country into unrest, was blamed by parliament and investigated for the uprising.
However, technically he is still the president of the country, as the Constitutional Court must decide whether its dismissal is valid.
Investigators managed to pass barricades set up by Presidential Security Service personnel to prevent Yoon's arrest. Over 1,000 officers were part of the operation, marking the second attempt to stop the president after that on 3 January.
Later, the 64-year-old leader said he agreed to appear before the Corruption Investigation Office for senior officials to avoid bloodshed. In a three-minute video message, Yoon said he would respect the investigation against him, even though he denies the accusations.
He has consistently indicated that the order to arrest him is not legally valid.
Yoon's People Power Party named his arrest as illegal “”, describing Wednesday's events as “to regret”.
On the other hand, opposition Democratic Party leader Park Chan-dae said Yoon's arrest showed that “justice in South Korea is alive”. This arrest “is the first step towards restoring constitutional order, democracy and rule of law,”, he said during a party meeting.
The country is currently headed by Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok as incumbent president. /Top Channel
