Five skiers have found death in two separate avalanches in the French Alps on Wednesday, local officials have confirmed.
A snow avalanche came to Val-Cenis, in the southeastern region of Savoy, killing four Norwegian skiers, while a Swiss skier died farther north in the Haute-Savoie region, near Chamonix, writes foreign media, records Telegrafi.
Three of the Norwegians died immediately, while one fourth, a woman, died in a nearby hospital after having suffered serious hypothermia and a cardiac arrest.
They were part of a larger group of seven skiers, and the other three were hurt.
Jacques Arnoux, mayor of Val-Cenis, said that “was an avalanche of large size that was caused outside the ski area”.
A team of 10 mountain rescue specialists were sent into operation, a police source said.
The Swiss victim, a 30-year-old woman, was skiing with her brother, who was sent to hospital for examination and her father, who was not hurt.
