US President Joe Biden developed policies in Serbia's favour. So writes Professor of International Relations in the United States and the connoisseur of developments in the Western Balkans Daniel Serwer, in an analysis of the outgoing administration and what is coming.
In an interview for A2 CNNThe expert expresses deep disappointment with the fact that both Biden and Antony Blinken, Derek Chollet and Christopher Hill, who knew the Western Balkans very well and the suffering of Kosovo, decided to implement a pro- Belgrade American policy.
“in most of the Biden Administration, Gabriel Escobar, former deputy Mission Chief in Belgrade, led state policies in the Balkans. He turned the formation of the Serb majority Communist Association to his top priority. This gave Belgrade what it most wanted, while Pristina gave nothing. This would never work, and it resulted in”, said Daniel Cerwer, professor of international relations.
The professor adds that Beden's men leaned even further towards Serbia, saying nothing useful when two Kosovo police officers were kidnapped inside its territory.
“When Vuciq sent violent people to attack NATO peacekeepers, Washington spoke very little. When Serbia organised the terrorist attack in Kosovo, they did nothing”, Daniel Serwer said.
American professor analyses that he does not expect the second administration of Trump to do something different, as he expects the groom's economic projects, Jared Kouchner, in Albania and Serbia, to be the priority.
You can expect Trump to do nothing that endangers Kouchner's projects with Saudi money. This means that it will continue to lean even further towards Belgrade and away from Pristina, yet not far from Tirana. Albania and Serbia agree on many things, including the need for their leaders to stay in power without a serious opposition”, the professor of international relations said.
Serwer stresses that the movement towards Belgrade will continue, while envisioning a deterioration of the situation if Washington returns to ideas about partitioning Kosovo on ethnic lines.
