US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke for the first time about the war in Ukraine after taking the government post, giving a grim assessment of the situation in this country.
“Ukrainian has returned a century later. Its energy infrastructure has been destroyed. Someone will have to pay for rebuilding it. Many Ukrainians have fled to other countries and may never return”, he claimed, stressing the serious consequences the war has brought upon the Ukrainian nation.
He underlined that Ukraine's future remains uncertain as the conflict continues without a clear solution to the horizon.
“From the American president's perspective, this is a prolonged conflict that must be resolved. Negotiations are necessary and both sides of the conflict will have to compromise”, Rubio said, implying that a diplomatic agreement could be the only way out of the war.
The war in Ukraine has had devastating consequences, not only for the country itself, but also for global stability.
Sanctions imposed on Russia, rising energy prices and the humanitarian crisis have affected many countries in the world. Millions of Ukrainians have moved away, creating one of the largest refugee crises in Europe since World War II.
By contrast, Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, causing thousands of victims and major material damage. Fighting continues, where neither side is showing signs of withdrawal, while international efforts to mediate a peaceful solution remain difficult. /Telegraph
