The quake also occurred in nearby Nepal and parts of India.
The US Geological Service announced that the quake was magnituded at 7.1 and struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers. China recorded the quake as 6.8.
The quake's epicentre was about 75 miles [75 km] northeast of Mount Everest, which lies on the border between China and Nepal. This area is seismologically active, as the subterranean tablets of India and Eurasia crash between them.
About 50 quakes were heard in three hours after the quake, and the tourist area of Mount Everest on the Chinese side was closed as a result.
Some 1,500 firefighters and rescuers have been sent to search for people trapped in ruins, according to the Emergency Management Ministry. Also, 200 soldiers joined the search operation, state media reports.
China's leader, Xi Jinping, called for widespread efforts to save people, undermine victims and organize people who have lost their homes.
Meanwhile, in Nepal, authorities urged officials in the Bedish area near the era to see if there are victims or damage.
The Kathmandu National Emergency Operations Centre reported that people in northeastern Nepal felt the earthquake, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or injuries at home. / REL/
