Under pre-inauguration celebrations, US President-elect Donald Trump attended the tradition mass in the Church of St. John on Monday, where some of the most popular names of global technology and business participated.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Meta leader Mark Zuckerberg, Apple leader Tim Cook, and Google CEO Sundar Picchai were seen among those present. They joined other prominent figures, such as media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The participation of technology personalities also included TikTok's executive chief, Shou Zi Chou, OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, and Uber leader Dara Khossheshahi. Elon Musk, the leader of SpaceX and Tesla, an important financial supporter of Trump's campaign with a $300m contribution, was also present.
The participation of the big leaders at the Trump inauguration ceremony comes as a surprising turn, given the tense relations these companies had with the previous Trump administration. Critics have raised concerns about the intentions of this approach, suggesting that leaders may seek to ease future regulatory policies affecting their industries.
Democrat Senators Elizabeth Warren and Michael Bennett, in an open letter last week, accused these leaders of trying to buy favors from the next administration.
However, Trump's approach to these directors has not been welcomed by all in its orbit. The former strategic adviser of the White House, Steve Bannon, openly criticised Elon Mousk, calling him a evil “Olararch” and stressing that the movement could cause dissatisfaction within Trump's political base.
Despite the criticism, the president-elect appears to be “having” with new friendships. In a post last month, Trump exclaimed: “Everyone wants to be my friends!”
The inauguration ceremony is expected to take place in the Capitol, where Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. /euronews
