The appointment marks a major step in Pope Francisescu' efforts to give women more leadership roles in church governance, the US agency said.
Never before has a woman been appointed mayor of a dictatorship, or congregation, of the Holy See Cures, the central governing body of the Catholic Church, the AP added.
Pope Francis today named Cardinal Robert McElroy of San Diego as the Archbishop of Washington.
