Former Slovenian president Borut Pahor, through a letter, has made it clear that Sė has applied for the position of the EU special emissary for mediating dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, for circumstances related to developments occurring after the EU elections and because of its commitments, the newspaper Express writes.
As reported Slovenia's Public Television, Pahor is said to have learned within informal conversations that a diplomat was also being sought for this position, not a politician.
Pahor himself has described this as a legitimate decision, however, says that such a thing continues the policy of technical dialogue, a dialogue which, according to him, has succeeded. The former Slovenian president says that due to the major change of circumstances, the time has come for a politician to be engaged in this position and to have political intervention, of course under the High Representative's instructions.
Pahor has said that the fear he would probably be arbitrary because of the political past is unfounded.
This is certainly a legitimate decision, but it continues the policy of technical dialogue, which has not been very well witnessed. However, in my opinion, because of the very changing circumstances, the time has come for a politician in this position and for political interference, of course under the instructions of the High Representative. Fear of being arbitrary because of my high political posts in the past is groundless”, Pahor said.
Pahor has been one of the first names he had made public his interest in succeeding Slovak Miroslav Lajcak, in the position of emissary. However, because of the circumstances that had been created, Lajcak has continued his mandate until January 31st, 2025.
