European leaders have voiced concern over frequent attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, while authorities are investigating the fourth incident in cutting underwater cables in recent months.
Recently, the Bulgarian ship Veshen was detained under suspicion that it broke a data cable between Sweden and Latvia. The ship's owner denied the charges, but Swedish security services are continuing investigations. Latvia and Sweden are co-operating with NATO to collect evidence and strengthen maritime infrastructure protection.
Finnish Prime Minister Petter Orpo described the alarming situation and called for a joint European response, including stricter sanctions on Russia.
This cannot continue. We should be on a common front in sanctions against Russia. That applies to every European Union country”, he said. /euronews
