Le Pen a denial of the Holocaust and an unrepentant extremist of race, gender, and immigration founded the far-right French National Front party in 1972.
Since his election as France's newest deputy, he was present at every stage in the postwar history of the far right French extreme.
Le Pen's daughter, Marine, took up the post of party chief in 2011. Since then, she has renamed the party as Rally National, turning it into one of France's leading political forces.
