Israeli leaders have high expectations from US President Donald Trump's second term, and analysts say Israeli officials hope his unusual approach to foreign policy will bring them the results they want in terms of their top security priorities. But according to Voice of America, President Trump's efforts to secure a peace agreement with Saudi Arabia can cause tensions with the Jewish state.
President Trump's latest proposal to manage the conflict in the Middle East by sending Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan is a typical example of what many in Israel see as an unusual approach to foreign policy, which can bring results in Israel's favour, such as aggressive access to Iran, Israel's main enemy.
Many Israelites, especially supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah's right-wing government, expect Israel to benefit from such policies as happened during Mr. Trump's first presidential mandate.
I believe that by working together again, we will move the alliance between the United States and Israel. I am confident that we will defeat Iran's terror axis and bring a new era of peace and progress to our region”He declared Netanyahu.
Some Israeli analysts say that with the support of President Trump, Israel could commit itself to destroying Iran's nuclear programme following the weakening of Iranian defence systems and militant groups linked to it in Gaza and Lebanon by Israeli attacks.
“Israel needs the support, cooperation and moral clarity of President Trump's new administration so that it may finally eliminate the Iranian regime and its nuclear programme”, Says Centre for Security and External Relations director Dan Dicker.
Other analysts say they are not sure President Trump would support Israeli Army actions against Iran.
“Initially, he will make efforts to reach an agreement, of course an agreement different from what he withdrew from, but reaching the agreement will be his first priority”, says Helit Barel, former director of the Israeli Council for National Security.
President Trump says he wants to expand Abraham's agreements, which were negotiated under his first administration between Israel and the Gulf states, creating a peace agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
He wants to be the person who reached the deal of the century. The more Israel normalizes relations with Gulf states, the more they can co-operate with each other to cope with security threats such as Iran, or groups like the Islamic State of America, and the less there will be work for America. From Mr. Trump's point of view, as far as his vision is concerned, he wants America to be engaged less”, Says Israeli and United States relations expert at Bar Elaine University, Jonathan Rynhold.
Saudi Arabia has declared that any peace accord with Israel will be conditional on progress towards establishing the Palestinian state -- a solution that the right-wing Israeli government opposes.
Such an attitude can become a source of confrontation between Lord Trump and Israelite leaders.
“He will try to reach agreement on a kind of Palestinian entity in the West Coast to resolve this issue eventually with Israel. This signals that Israel must precede this issue and offer a variety of different options”Says analyst Dicker.
President Trump has pledged to end all wars, and in Israel, the dominant decision is that it was his due to reach the current ceasefire with Hamas, as well as the agreement to release the hostages.
But finding sustainable solutions to the Middle East conflicts can be a more difficult challenge for the restored American president. / VOA/
