Israeli Army Chief of General Staff Herzegovina Halev announced on Tuesday that he has resigned from office, taking responsibility for Hamas' deadly attack on October 7th 2023 in Israel.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army carried out a major military operation on the occupied West Coast on Tuesday, killing six people and injuring 35 others, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Halev, who took office in January 2023, said his resignation would take effect on March 6th.
General Halev is the top Israeli official to resign because of security failure on October 7th 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led militants -- the Palestinian group declared US and EU terrorist -- entered south of Israel and attacked communities near the border and military bases.
The attack killed 1,200 people mostly civilians and 250 others were kidnapped. More than 90 hostages are still being held in Gaza, and it is believed that about a third of them have already died.
In his letter of resignation, Halev said the army, under his leadership, “failed in its duty to protect the state of Israel”.
Israel's Operation on Jenny
Earlier, Israel announced it was carrying out <x0) large and wide military operations” against Palestinian militants in Jenny.
Wars have often taken place in this city between the Israeli army and militants in recent years, even before Hamas' attack on October 7th, which sparked the war in Gaza.
The war in Gaza has caused numerous victims and major material damage. More than 46,000 Palestinians have been killed as a result of the Israeli offensive.
Tuesday's operation took place a few days after a fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in Gaza took effect at the weekend.
Nine killed by Israeli attacks on West Coast, Palestinian officials say
Israel conquered the West Coast, along with Gaza and East Jerusalem during the Middle East War in 1967.
The Palestinians want these three territories to be part of their future state.
The truce isn't worth the West Coast, where violence has increased a lot since the beginning of the war. The Israeli army has performed operations on the West Coast almost every day, which have often sparked fighting.
There have also been increased attacks by Hebrew extremists on Palestinians during this time, as well as attacks by Palestinians on the Israelites. /rel
