The US State Department has closed the website informing citizens of the possibility of selecting the alternative gender in American passports.
The move took place just a day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that recognises only two genders, male and female, excluding the official recognition of transgjitors.
The website informed citizens that they could choose one of three options for gender markers in their passports -- male (M), female (F), or an undefined or alternative identity (X).
The report pointed out that applicants did not need medical documentation to change the gender marker.
Now, the page in question redirects users to a general section for information on passport extraction.
In the executive order signed on the first day in office, Trump stated that the federal government would recognise only two genders -- male and female -- arguing that “these genders are unchanged and based on fundamental and incompatible reality.” This movement overturned previous policies that had expanded the rights of transgender and non-binarch persons in official documents.
Human rights activists have sharply criticised the decision, calling it a step back for US civil rights.
“This is an open attack on transgiar and non-binar identities,” said Sarah McBride, a senior activist and official at Human Rights Campagn.
The BBC writes that the change has sparked concerns in transnational communities within and outside the US.
While many American states led by progressive governors have promised to continue recognising different genders at the local level.
On the other hand, Trump supporters have welcomed the decision, calling it a safeguard against traditional values and family.
