Authorities identified at least 24 people dead as the result of fires, while another 16 are missing.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said this could be the biggest natural disaster in US history after destroying thousands of homes and forcing over 100,000 people to evacuate.
According to officials, more than 12,300 structures have been damaged or destroyed.
The situation is expected to exacerbate winds at speeds of between 80 and 112 miles per hour, which, according to the National Weather Service, began on Sunday evening and will last until Wednesday.
Officials warned the entire population of the Los Angeles District of approximately 10 million people that it could be ordered to evacuate from flames and toxic smoke.
These low relative humidity combination winds will keep the threat high by fire”, Los Angeles district fire chief Anthony Marione said at a news conference.
What caused the fires?
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said that detectives are continuing to investigate possible causes.
“Absolutely, everything is on the table”, he said.
California's very wet years in 2022 and 2023 gave rise to vegetation, but it was dried up last year because of dryness, turning into trees.
Although strong winds and lack of rain fuel fires, experts say climate change is also increasing the likelihood of such fires.
Fires in Los Angeles can result in the most expensive in U.S. history.
According to a preliminary assessment of the AccuWather media, the value of damage could reach up to $150 billion. / REL
