Former Finnish diplomat Pekka Haavisto, though spoken of as a possible name to replace Slovak emissary Miroslav Lajcak, in mediating the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Finnish newspaper “Ila Sanomat”, reveals neither he is in the process of assuming an important position in the United Nations that relates to the Middle East.
As the paper “writes IS”, Finland has asked Israel for support in appointing Haavisto in the position of special co-ordinator of the UN Peace Process in the Middle East, since the state of Izarelli has come against it.
On Tuesday, it became clear that MP Haavisto's appointment as special co-ordinator of the UN peace process in the Middle East has been jeopardised in final stages due to Israeli opposition”, writes Finnish newspaper “today. IS.fi”, Report Express.
The Finnish newspaper further added that a well-known source of UN affairs says Haavisto's chances of being elected would be weakened, especially if Israeli leaders have openly declared that they do not support Haavisto's position.
The UN secretary-general makes his decision independently for the appointment to this position, but the views of the parties are usually taken into account in this kind of appointment.
Finland's MPJ today in an answer to the Express newspaper about whether Pekka Haavisto and Kai Sauer have applied for emissar in Brussels and if they are supporting them, have confirmed that Finland has submitted no candidate for the position of the EU special minister for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
