The quake that struck the holy city of Tibet around 09:00 local time (01:00 GMT) had a 7.1 magnitude and a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), according to data from the U.S. Geological Service, which also showed a series of post-ciditings in the area.
It also felt in nearby Nepal and parts of India.
Earthquakes are common in the region, which extends into a broken geologic line.
Chinese state media reported that the quake had a slightly smaller magnitude of 6.8, triggering visible “ ” and leading to damage to over 1,000 homes.
After a major earthquake, there is always a gradual softening process,” told CCTV Jiang Haik, a researcher at the Earthquake Network Center in China.
Chinese air force has launched rescue efforts and fears in the affected area, located at the foot of Mount Everest and where temperatures are well below zero.
The region, which extends near a key fault line of Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, is home to frequent seismic activity. /euronews
