The US congress officially certified President-elect Donald Trump's election victory in the November elections, paving the way for his oath on January 20th.
The certificate of election results Monday in the 50 states and in the Columbia District was conveyed at a brief official ceremony during a joint session of the House of Representatives and Senate. This session was led by Vice President Kamala Harris, Mr. Trump's Democrat rival in the presidential election, which was presented in the role of head of the Senate.
This ritual, which takes place every four years, marked by the first four years when a crowd of supporters of Mr. Trump broke into the Capitol, making a failed attempt to block the certificate of the 2020 loss of then President Trump to Democrat President Joe Biden.
Mr. Trump continues to make unconfirmed claims that his loss in 2020 was the result of widespread theft. He has continued to express similar concerns during the entire 2024 campaign, until he was able to win over Mrs. Harris on November 5th.
The Congress today certified our amazing victory a great moment in history. MAGA (incials for “Making America again majestic)”Mr. Trump wrote on his social platform, Truth Social on Monday.
The joint session of Congress was held despite the snowstorm that swept the American capital, with snowfall reaching up to 15cm and preventing traffic flow.
The final certificate sealed the preliminary results that Mr. Trump won 312 votes from the Electoral College compared to 226 votes from Mrs. Harris.
Republicans will search the White House and Congress
Republicans also won most of the seats in the American Senate and a narrow majority in the House of Representatives in the November elections, a victory that will give Mr. Trump the support of the party, which he needs to implement his plan to cut taxes and expel illegal immigrants.
The Democrats did not try to block the certificate of Mr. Trump's victory Monday.
We have to engage again to protect American democracy”, said the deputy chairman of the democrat lawmakers in the House of Representatives, Catherine Clark. As elected representatives, we must be faithful, primarily and always to the Constitution. We are here to respect the will of the people and rule of law”
Security measures within and outside of the Capitol were strengthened on the eve of certificates and are expected to remain such until Mr. Trump's oath ceremony.
The perimeter around the Capitol was surrounded by metal barricades, and entry at certain points was guarded by uniformed policemen.
Black police cars were located nearby. The reinforcements from the New York Police Department have also been deployed to patrol the area.
Inside the building, additional Capitol police teams control ID documents in the building's entrances, including underground doors and tunnels leading to House of Representatives and Senate halls.
Mr. Trump has stated that he plans to forgive some of the 1,500 people indicted for participating in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, when the crowd slammed into the police, breaking through windows and doors while cheering “Hang Mike Pence”Mr. Trump's then vice president, in an attempt to prevent Mr. Biden's victory from being certified by Congress.
In the 2021 riots in the Capitol, violent protesters broke down police barricades, attacking 140 members of the police, and causing damage, amounting to $2.8 million. Some of the policemen who clashed with protesters died in the coming weeks, some of them committed suicide.
Because of the violence of that day, Congress passed laws at the end of 2022 for the undertaking of additional measures to ensure that the Certificate process is legal.
Many of these changes have been made in response to Mr. Trump's actions before and during January 6, 2021. For example, the new law says the vice president's role is largely ceremonial. / VOA
