The European unit for filling drinks of the Coca-Cola company said on Monday it has ordered a massive withdrawal of Koke, Sprite and others, as it has observed high levels of chlorine, which could pose health risks.
Coca-Cola said cans and glass bottles that had high levels of this substance had been distributed in Belgium, Netherlands, Britain, Germany, France and Luxembourg since November last year, declared for AFP from the Coca-Cola European Partners company in Belgium.
“We don't have an exact figure, but it's clear that it's a significant amount”, the company said regarding the amount of drinks with high levels of chemical substance.
Regarding the issue of beverages of the Coca-Cola company, which is also sold in Kosovo, Radio Free Europe has also contacted the Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV).
Cloat can be found in food, as it stems from chlorinators commonly used for water treatment and food processing.
In a scientific opinion published in 2015, the European Food Safety Authority said that long-term exposure to chloride is possible health concern for children, in particular to those who have a small or medium-sized shortage of iodine.
The majority of the affected products were unsurpassed products that have only been withdrawn from shop shelves, and we continue to take measures to evacuate the remaining products on the market”, Coca-Cola Europe Partners said.
But, the French branch of the company said that analyses by independent experts “came to the conclusion that the possibility of connection to a risk” was the tiny “”.
“We have not accepted any complaints from consumers”, the company said.
The affected drinks of Koke and Fuze Thea were distributed to France, but currently the order to attract products is not being applied in France, the company added.
Coca-Cola Europecif Partners said he apologises to consumers for the command to withdraw. The company said high levels of the substance were warned during a routine check at the Gent production plant.
The affected products had a production code of 328 GE to 338 GE, and included frogs such as Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Blis and Tropico, the company said, adding that it is in contact with competent authorities in the affected markets. / REL/
