According to him, the US is ready to lead in dialogue, as “The EU testified to its inability to mediate in finding solution”.
“We know that President Trump is interested in resolving Kosovo's status in order to prevent China and Russia from gaining influence in Serbia and to allow American troops in Kosovo to return home to mark a success of foreign policy. In this direction, Richard Grenelli's appointment from President Trump's appointment as special mission envoy is a strong signal that the US is ready to take responsibility again”, Les said.
Speaking of Trump's stance on Europe, Les stresses that his main goals in Europe will most likely be for Europeans to take on more responsibility for their safety, ease the US burden, and distance themselves from China.
“Trump will also expect Europeans to pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine when fighting is over and to ensure its security by deploying troops on the ground. Bilaterally, the Trump administration is likely to be less attractive to liberal governments than to a Biden administration and more sympathetic to conservative-minded governments, provided they do not act against US interests by drawing very close to China”, Les said.
