KFOR Commander, Italian General Enrico Bardonini, has said the opening of the Ibër Bridge at this time would risk the lives of soldiers of the mission he is leading.
In an interview for “Kosovo Onlain”, he said the decision to open the bridge should be made within the dialogue in Brussels.
“As far as bridge is concerned on the Iber River, attitude of NATO and KFOR were clear, transparent and consistent. Due to unresolved political issues, the opening of the bridge at this time would expose KFOR soldiers and the local community to an unacceptable and unnecessary danger of violence. Decisions for opening the bridge over the Iber River in Mitrovica should be taken through timely and effective dialogue and co-ordination with the international community and KFOR”, he said in this interview.
Speaking of security, Bardon said the situation on the ground is calm, but remains fragile.
I can assure you that KFOR is constantly monitoring all events that can affect security in Kosovo and beyond the region. KFOR is well equipped and positioned to prevent escalation and respond to any security situation, in line with our UN mandate. Therefore, we will continue to ensure a secure environment and freedom of movement at any time and impartially”, KFOR commander said.
