Thomas tells the BBC that collisions in the air were supposed to be something of the past and that new technology enabled aircraft to talk electronically to each other to warn pilots of such imminent clashes.
This is a system called Trafoff Collition Avoidance System (TCAS)Which Thomas says has saved tens of thousands of lives in recent decades.
He adds that all commercial planes and most military aircraft are equipped with this technology.
The “textically (the crash) should never have happened. It's confusing and tragic”, he added.
