The subject, a 40-year-old Albanian with numerous identities, was seized in Slovenia in connection with a murder occurred in early December near Ljubljana. Along with two associates, he allegedly killed a justice associate whose murder shocked the region.
Also for the same Italian police person, in particular Prosecutor Busto Ariszio had activated the alarm for his identification, as he was wanted as a suspect in the murder of a Ukrainian in the neighbouring state.
The prosecution began after the crime of Vadym Ussayi, a 46-year-old Ukrainian homeless, killed by two shootings on the 27 October evening in Saronno, in the province of Warese. Investigators identified the 40-year-old as the top suspect, creating a view of criminal co-operation that extends beyond national borders.
The investigation began immediately after the crime and, thanks to advanced technological tests such as cell phones analysis and monitoring of security cameras, the movement of the suspect who had fled to Switzerland and was later returned to Italy.
Phone tracks and other wiretapping have led to identification of his whereabouts, enabling co-operation with Slovenian authorities for his capture.
This case has shown how technology can be a powerful tool in fighting organised crime, improving international co-ordination and enabling such successful operations.
At the moment, Italian authorities are waiting for verification of the identity of those arrested via fingerprints, an important step towards launching legal procedures. This development paves the way for extradition procedures and international prosecution opportunities. /euronews
