Alexei Navalny's family and supporters have continued to seek access to the body of the late Kremlin critic, as those who pay their respects to him continue to be arrested.
Russian authorities have said on February 16th that he died in an Arctic prison.
Latvia-based Novaya Gazeta has said on February 18th that police are guarding a local morgue in the Siberian town of Salekhrad, as speculations of where the 47-year-old body is located grow.
The Navajo family and his close assistant have confirmed his death in prison, and have demanded that his body be handed over, but authorities have refused the request, telling his lawyers and his mother, that <x0/1> statements due to death will end within the week.
Novaya has reported, based on some anonymous sources, that signs of bruise have been seen in the body of Navalny.
But these reports have not been independently identified.
Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, will meet with European Union foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday.
EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell has pledged that the EU <x0 ministers will send a powerful message of support to freedom fighters in Russia and the memory of Alexei” will be honoured.
Since the news of his death has been made public, Russian police have surrounded areas where people have lit candles and sent flowers in honor of Navajo.
Russian police forces have deployed supporters and arrested more than 400 people in at least 36 cities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has not mentioned Navajo so far, nor has he died.
But the West has condemned Putin and his administration, while US President Joe Biden has said that “has no doubt” that Putin is to blame for the death of Navalny.
Navalny has been sentenced to more than 19 years in prison on charges he and his supporters have been considered politically motivated.
He was poisoned in 2020 with Novicok nervous agent, and the world blamed the state camera, in charge of Putin, on that decision.
Navalny has recovered in Germany after the poisoning, and on the day of his return to Russia, he has been sent to prison.
