Albanian intellectuals petitioned for the media: Remove charlatans from the screens

A wide group of dozens of Albanian intellectuals, including academics and professors like Rexhep Qosja, Pellumb Jufii, Xhevat Lioshi, Bamir Topi, Fatos Tarifa, Etkehem Ruka, have published and submitted an open petition, where they practically require the removal of inappropriate figures from television screens.

This petition, which is expected to be submitted on February 19th, addresses the Republic Assembly, the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Media and Information Agency, the National Information Society Agency, as well as the Audiovisitive Media Authority.

The document notes that firms are very concerned about the quality of audiovisive media and the respect of scientific information, so they also want to address institutions with an important and urgent request.

According to them, the low level of scientific information in one part of the media, promoting amateur knowledge, a vulgar etimology, and charlatanism, have created an alarming situation.

Some television studios have even been converted into platforms for sexually unprepared individuals who promote the idea that Albanian is the oldest language in the world and the mother of all languages, that all languages of the world are explained by Albanian, that it is the language of nature, that this language begins with the beginnings of mankind and so on.

Such formulas have nothing scientific, and as such, they cultivate sick and dangerous psychosis in public opinion.

What is written in the complete petition, and who are the firms?

With this petition, we, a group of researchers, intellectuals, students and other citizens, very concerned about the quality of audiovisual media and the respect of scientific information, want to be addressed with an important and urgent request.

The institution that is obligated to protect the public from wrong, harmful, and dangerous information is AMA. This institution has this task included in its statute and this responsibility at point “The fundamental plugins for audiovisual broadcast activity”, via “garantation of information rights” and “respect of the Albanian language literary standard”.

Can the mire of figures with remarkable contribution be allowed in the field of albanology, such as Prof's. Eqrem Cabejt, internationally known by albanology?

The impression is that the media and some of the individuals invited by them want to create a “Albanian science”, which opposes that world, which makes us ridiculous in the face of the world. Some television shows are attacked with anti - science language, all that has been achieved for a long time by albanological studies, and so ignorance is struggling to dominate knowledge.

The aggression of certain individuals who lack all kinds of expertise and professionalism in the field of language, but who claim to have the monopoly of truth, tolerate and feed TV leaders who popularize them not only by regularly inviting them to their studios but also by supporting them in their hallucinating ideas.

Such aggression has resulted in the rejection of representatives of genuine scientific thought in our country, since they are not spared slander, abusive speech, and threats. The study of the age of Albanian cannot be left to pre-eminents, improvised enmitologists whose views would be accepted by no scientific forums inside and outside Albania.

Media freedom does not mean a lack of responsibility in the media. Echoing all kinds of “discovery” regarding Albanian age, some television channels have sparked a nationalism hysteria that provides “surves” thousands of sympathies in their portals.

In fact, science cannot create a crowd of followers except in totalitarian regimes when it is used for propaganda. And scientists, in their scientific research and confrontations, do not use aggressive, offensive languages, but scientific arguments.

This situation - the attack on true science - should be considered a very serious national issue, and a problem that adds to the other problems our country faces; it creates and increases disagreement and a very unnecessary and damaging date among fellow countrymen.

Another obligation of AMA, defined in the statute of this authority, is to prevent interethnic conflicts in television shows. This obligation does not seem to be applied properly when allowed to be presented as historical truths that have no basis for the origin of our Albanians and neighbours, as happens when other countries are denied nation, history, language.

Even the literary standard of Albanian is not respected in our media. Of course, this must be the obligation for the showmasters, news speakers, official reporting, and not artistic literature, not singing, not guests.

To curb this disturbing situation, we suggest:

(a) Take appropriate measures for AMA to carry out its duty to control the quality of emissions in our media;

(b) Scientific sources and studies are clearly identified in all scientific reports;

(c) TV shows talk with an understandable language to explain scientific termiology for general audiences;

(c) The Ministry of Education does not allow teachers to teach students and students theories disapproved by science;

(d) The government, first of all, has an agenda to raise the cultural level of citizens so that they do not fall prey to all kinds of anti-sect theories.
