But according to foreign media, the Syrian dictator's large family purchased at least 20 apartments in Moscow worth more than 30 million pounds in recent years, illustrating Russia's status as a safe haven.
According to reports, the Kremlin was given asylum under the direct order of Vladimir Putin.
Moscow did not reveal further details, with presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters today: “We have nothing to say about Assad's location”.
Lady Assad, who has been struggling with an aggressive form of leukemia, is widely believed to have arrived in Moscow with her daughter and two sons days before her husband eventually left Syria.
Secret tunnels under a residence of the Assad family were reportedly discovered after the rebels invaded the capital city of Damascus on Sunday, with the network serving as a possible escape route for the dictator and his allies.

Meanwhile, reports have stressed that Assad could have fled via the Russian air base Comtimim, with flight trackers reportedly showing a Russian plane rising close to the northeastern town of Latakia, just hours before he was reported to be in Moscow.
