The 41-year-old is a private astronaut, billionaire and close associate of Elon Musk. Isaacman has flown into space twice on missions regulated by his Polish programme, an effort using SpaceX ships and company space suits to complete fully private flights to Earth's orbit.
“Jared will lead NASA's mission of discovery and inspiration, paving the way for innovative achievements in science, technology and exploration ofspace”, Trump said in a post on his platform “Truth Social”.
Trump Selection for NASA came months earlier than past presidential transitions after Musk, CEO and founder of SpaceX, has used his proximity to the president elected to discuss missions in March and other space exploration issues from SpaceX.
Trump took part in SpaceX's sixth Starship test in Texas last month.
NASA's last two appointed administrators were former politicians. First Chief of Trump's NASA, the former Oklahoma Congressman, Jim Bridenstein, launched the Artemis programme and convinced Congress to increase the agency's budget to finance it. Biden named former US Senator Bill Nelson from Florida to lead NASA.
