Former US Department of Defence Chief of Staff in the first administration of Trump, Patel has been a staunch supporter of the future republican president.
For Patel to take this post, the current FBI director, Christopher Wray, would have to resign or be fired, although Trump did not ask to do so.
Trump said he plans to appoint Chad Chronister, sheriff of Florida's Hillsborough County, as head of the Drug Combating Implementation Agency, transmits Telegrafi.
Patel and Chronister join candidate for Attorney General Pam Bond, in carrying out elections on the area of True Law enforcement.
Also Saturday, Trump announced that he had chosen Charles Kouchner as the next ambassador to France.
Kouchner is a real estate developer and the father of Jared Kouchner, husband of his daughter Ivanka Trump.
The appointment appears to be the administration's first position, which Trump has officially offered to a relative since his re-election.
