Chinese hackers moved from distance to several US Treasury Department work stations and unmatified documents after compromising a third-party software service provider.
The department did not elaborate on how many working stations were violated or what kind of documents hackers may have received, but said in a letter to lawmakers who discovered the violation that “at this time has no evidence showing that the threat actor has continued access to Treasury” information.
The Thessari takes all threats against our systems very seriously, and the data he holds” was told by the Treasury.
“over the past four years, the Treasury has significantly strengthened its cyber defence and we will continue to work with private and public sector partners to protect our financial system from threat actors”, others were told.
The letter describes retaliation as a large “cident”, broadcast Telegraphy.
The department said it learned of the problem on December 8th when a third-party software service provider, BeyondTrust, announced that hackers had stolen a key used by the vendor who helped him cancel the system and gain access to several employee working stations.
The compromised service has since been removed and there is no evidence that hackers still have access to department information”, said Aditi Hardikar, assistant Treasury Secretary, in letter to the heads of the Senate Bank Committee on Monday.
The department said it was working with the FBI and the Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency, and that revenge was attributed to the Chinese culprits.
