Kosovo citizen Nezir Mehmetaj has been sentenced by Serbian judicial authorities to six years in prison, on charges of war crimes.
The sentence will account for the time remaining in custody, and this decision on the first instance of the Serbian judiciary could be appealed.
He was arrested on 3 January 2020 at the Merdar border crossing and has since been held in custody.
That same year, Serbian judicial authorities brought charges against him for war crimes.
In this decision, Nezir's brother Valon Mehmetaj has reacted. “Sic you have come to understand from various sources my brother is being held in prison in Serbia since January 03th of 2020, and after many court hearings today, December 06th has been awarded the sentence of justice organs in Serbia, and as a result, Nezir Mehmetaj is sentenced to 6 years in prison”, Valon Mehmetaj said.
He says this news has been accepted shortly after the hearing was concluded by lawyers and by the Kosovo Republic Liaison Office official.
This news about the family is not welcome because for nearly five years there has been no single fact linking the brother to the charge he filed against him, but it's indigenous that this trial has been prolonged, started in March 2021 and completed on December 6, 2024, so we hope that justice in the state of Serbia will find it reasonable to release for the short term Nezir by counting on the time of maintenance and other procedures to continue on December 6th, 201x> he has declared for RTK.
By the War Crimes Prosecutor in Belgrade, they had said Mehmetaj was accused of war crimes against the civilian population during the June-July period of 1999. Crime was allegedly committed in the village of Rudica, Cline Town.
