President Emmanuel Macron will not attend the European Union summit in Brussels today and will be represented by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Élysée Palace announced today.
Macro will travel to the French territory of the Indian Ocean, Mayotte, to inspect the damage caused by the Cyclone “Chido” over the past weekend.
Hundreds of people are believed to have died of destruction.
To have Germany as France's representative remains a practice imposed on circumstances such as these”, the Macron office said.
Relations between the two leaders are reported to be tense amid claims that the two key EU countries are not always together.
The topics at the EU summit include war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and irregular migration to the bloc.
Summits will be held today in Brussels.
